PITT OHIO Wins 6th ATA President’s Trophy

Pittsburgh, PA (November 5th, 2015) - PITT OHIO announced today that they have been awarded their sixth American Trucking Association (ATA) President´s Trophy. The award also has the industry consensus of being the highest safety award available to all motor carriers in the United States.

The President´s Trophy is presented by the ATA and its Safety Management Council to one carrier in each of the following categories: Under 25 Million Miles (small fleet); 25 to 100 Million Miles (mid-size fleet); and Over 100 Million Miles (large fleet). PITT OHIO earned the award in the mid-size fleet category.

PITT OHIO Selected as LTL Carrier of the Quarter by Harte Hanks

Pittsburgh, PA (August 21st, 2015) - In August, PITT OHIO was selected as LTL Carrier of the Quarter by its customer, Harte Hanks.

In this inaugural Carrier Recognition Program, Harte Hanks selects carriers based on: Number of shipments transported, On-time pickup and delivery performance and low claims ratio. Only the top 5 LTL carriers meeting these criteria out of over 30 LTL carriers hauling shipments for Harte Hanks in the second quarter of 2015 were selected.

“We at Harte Hanks really appreciate your commitment to assisting us in moving our freight and exceeding our quality and safety standards,” Kevin Berthiaume, Vice President of Logistics at Harte Hanks said in a letter to PITT OHIO.

Harte Hanks will consider all Carriers of the Quarter in their selection for LTL Carrier of the Year for 2015.

PITT OHIO Wins 2015 Quest For Quality Award

Pittsburgh, PA (August 18th, 2015) - PITT OHIO wins Logistics Management Magazine’s Quest for Quality Award in the Regional Less-Than-Truckload Northeast category. For the twenty-first time, PITT OHIO has earned a spot in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) category, finishing at the top of the list in 2015.

The results, according to the magazine, align with what many analysts believe to be true – that the top regional carriers like PITT OHIO have done a terrific job over the past 12 months of maintaining top service levels. 2015 marks the tenth year in a row that PITT OHIO has earned a spot on the regional LTL Quest for Quality list.

PITT OHIO Drivers to Compete at the 2015 ATA National Truck Driving Championships

Pittsburgh, PA (July 20th, 2015) - Two drivers representing PITT OHIO placed among the top finishers at the 2015 State Truck Driving Championships in Ohio and West Virginia and will represent the company at the National competition in St. Louis, Missouri August 11-15. A total of 20 PITT OHIO drivers competed at the state championships throughout Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Six PITT OHIO drivers earned first, second and third place trophies in their respective state competitions, with one, Eric Schimming, earning the Grand Champion award in Ohio.

Ohio State Championships

Eric Schimming, from the company’s Toledo terminal, earned the first place finish in the 5-Axle Class Competition and earned the Overall Grand Champion Award for scoring the highest among all drivers in the State. This will be Eric’s first appearance at the National Competition.
Michael Jackson, from the company’s Columbus terminal, finished in second place in the 5-Axle Class Competition.

Maryland State Championships

Michael Miltenberger, from the company’s Cumberland terminal, finished in third place in the 5-Axle Competition.

West Virginia Championships

Nick Backes, from the company’s Charleston terminal, earned the first place finish in the Tanker Class. This will be Nick’s second appearance at the National Competition.
Charles Randolph, from the company’s Charleston terminal, finished in third place in the Straight Truck Class Competition.
Craig Payton, from the company’s Charleston terminal, earned a third place finish in the 4-Axle Class Competition.

The Truck Driving Championships is an opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their driving skills and safety expertise. The event includes a difficult driving-skills challenge, pre-trip inspection and written examination covering vehicle operation and knowledge of federal safety regulations.

PITT OHIO to Expand Core Service Area to Include Louisville, Kentucky

Pittsburgh, PA (July 7th, 2015) - PITT OHIO announced today plans to expand service to Kentucky, specifically the Louisville market, starting Monday, August 17.

PITT OHIO has grown continuously over the last 35 years, responding to customer needs for more services and increased direct coverage area.

"Our focus on providing customer-centric solutions to shippers has lead PITT OHIO to expand our core service area to include the metro Louisville market," said Geoffrey Muessig, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President. "Customers tell us that we can enhance their supply chains by providing reliable and dependable LTL service between the Mid-Atlantic states and Louisville."

"Current PITT OHIO clients and new customers can anticipate the same level of performance in Louisville expected from PITT OHIO elsewhere," Brad Caven, Vice President of Operations remarked. "Our Cincinnati terminal is well-equipped to exceed expectations to and from these markets in Kentucky."

Standard service times will be 1-2 days in most areas of PITT OHIO’s direct service area. Service to Louisville Kentucky will start Monday, August 17. Customers with freight in PITT OHIO´s current direct coverage area destined for Louisville can begin scheduling pickups on Friday, August 14.

PITT OHIO to Celebrate 10 Years of Great American Clean Up of PA

Pittsburgh, PA (April 20th, 2015) - On Saturday, April 25 PITT OHIO will celebrate its 10th anniversary of the Great American Clean Up of PA where the company has been cleaning up the streets of the Strip District area of Downtown Pittsburgh once a year in recognition of Earth Day.

The Strip District, home to the company’s Headquarters, has experienced tremendous growth and revitalization in ten years´ time. "The Strip District was a very different place ten years ago," said PITT OHIO President, Chuck Hammel. "I’m proud of the progress this area has made and the commitment from PITT OHIO employees to preserving this great part of our city. Year after year I am awed at their enthusiasm and I am committed to supporting these efforts."

Over the course of a decade, PITT OHIO has picked up over 1,500 bags of liter in the Strip District and participated in a beautification project in 2014 at the Rails to Trails near 21st Street.

PITT OHIO´s Manager of Training & Development Honored by the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association

Pittsburgh, PA (April 17th, 2015) - On Thursday, March 26 Dean Yockey was presented with the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association (PMTA) Gogolin Award in recognition of his outstanding dedication to truck safety and continued efforts and contributions to the PMTA on behalf of PITT OHIO.

Yockey has been instrumental to the success of PITT OHIO’s safety department for over 28 years and is currently the company’s Manager of Training and Development. The award is named after Edward Gogolin who joined PMTA in 1930 and dedicated the next 40 years of his career to elevating the field of safety in the trucking industry.

PITT OHIO Celebrates Earth Day by Promoting a more Sustainable and Green Approach

Sustainability Report

PITT OHIO released its 3rd annual Sustainability Report detailing the company's progress in creating social, environmental and economic value in 2014. The Sustainabilty Report highlights the critical milestones achieved in 2014 including better-quality MPG performance and a reduction in electricity usage and carbon output. "We understand the impact our trucks have on the environment, the economy and our communities and we are committed to making the appropriate investments needed to improving our MPG performance," commented Denny Martin, Director of Vehicle Maintenance. "In 2014, we saw positive results from the 9 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles we introduced into our fleet. CNG vehicles are said to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions by up to 20%."

PITT OHIO’s goal is to handle each shipment more efficiently. In 2014, PITT OHIO’s carbon per shipment went down another 1.4% due to reduced electricity usage and improved MPG. Chief Marketing Officer, Geoff Muessig said, "This marks 3 years in a row that we’ve documented an improvement in our carbon output. We are reducing the environmental footprint of our service while still delivering the quality and performance people expect from PITT OHIO."

Carbon Calculator*

PITT OHIO released CO2 Track to the public, which is the company’s patent pending carbon calculator. LTL shippers will have access to proprietary information that will help them measure the carbon output that is associated with the distribution of their products in the PITT OHIO network. "For the LTL industry, the challenge is to understand how much carbon to apportion to each shipment," said Manager of Market Research Justine Russo.

PITT OHIO’s CO2 Track combines the company’s proprietary costing calculations along with the patent-pending carbon calculator to allow each customer to estimate how much carbon was emitted when shipping their freight. <"For customers with carbon reduction strategies, this information is critical for understanding their Scope 3 emissions,” Russo continued. “We then take it one step further by partnering with Carbondfund.org to then allow customers to offset these emissions to create a carbon neutral shipping option."

LEED* Certified Terminal

PITT OHIO’s new Pittsburgh terminal, which opened in October, is the first LEED Certified Trucking Terminal in Western Pennsylvania. The 96,000 square foot complex in Harmar Township is home to a 100 dock door terminal for PITT OHIO, a state-of-the-art mechanic shop, and a 3 story office building. 68% of all buildings were made from recycled content and designed and constructed with the goal of reducing the impact on the environment throughout all phases of its life cycle, including: siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal.

The new facility aligns with PITT OHIO’s commitment to a sustainable culture, and includes green landscape elements and energy efficient lighting, water, and heating and cooling. The building site orientation was situated to take advantage of maximum daylight capacities and includes large translucent window panels on the dock to allow for abundant natural light during the daytime.

The terminal is located on 32 developed acres at 1 Rich Hill Road in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, 13 miles from its previous location in the Strip District area of downtown Pittsburgh. PITT OHIO has maintained a presence in the Pittsburgh area for 35 years. The company’s corporate headquarters will remain in the Strip District at 15 27th Street.

*LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy. Certified Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels of LEED certification are awarded based on the total number of points earned within six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design. TRNet Carriers and Customer Vicro win Alliance Award

World Trade 100 magazine, a leading transportation industry publication, and SMC³, an industry trade association, have awarded PITT OHIO, its TRNet affiliates Averitt Express and Land Air and customer Vicro with an Alliance Award in the Domestic Freight Single Mode category.

PITT OHIO, Averitt and Land Air developed a hybrid pool distribution program in an effort to help Vicro meet its seasonal peak while improving service and reducing costs. According to Paul Gall, corporate director of logistics for Vicro, "the results were a smoother peak season for Vicro, better service, less damage, and substantial cost savings because the carriers in this Alliance took the attitude that they were moving product, not volume."

The Alliance awards program, now in its third year, recognizes excellence in supply chain performance resulting from the close cooperation and collaboration of supply chain partners. Awarded in five distinct categories, The Alliance looks at more than the outcome of the supply chain partnerships; it also examines the dynamic partnerships that were formed to drive results. A panel of distinguished judges examined the role of each of the partners and the contributions their individual and collective efforts made to solving a supply chain problem or driving change and continuous improvement in a supply chain.

The award was presented at SMC3’s Jump Start conference in January.
