PITT OHIO Salutes Veterans

On November 12, PITT OHIO and its employees will pause to honor the veterans and members of the U.S. military who sacrifice to serve their country and protect our freedoms.

PITT OHIO has supported military service members and veterans since its opening in 1979. Today the Company employs more than 320 Veteran employees, nearly 10% of its workforce, working in a variety of roles across its footprint in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions. A number PITT OHIO plans to increase by creating an easy transition from military service to civilian life.

“I am currently in the Indiana National Guard and life can sometimes be hectic trying to balance both my civilian job and my military duties,” Jared Williams, a Dockworker at the companies Indianapolis terminal, said. “With that being said, PITT OHIO has gone above and beyond to make sure that they can make that as easy as possible on me. They have been incredibly flexible with me and my military schedule and I don’t feel guilty for having to leave on days where I have to go to drill.”

“I started working for PITT OHIO right after I left the Marine Corps,” Charles Heath, Columbus Supervisor, said. “The transition was very easy and seamless, I filled out the application then was called right in and offered the job. I have been with PITT OHIO for close to 10 years now and it has become a both challenging and rewarding career. I am proud to be a part of the PITT OHIO team!”

Columbus Linehaul Driver John Stertzer said, “I worked for PITT OHIO before I joined the military and came back to continue working for PITT OHIO after I left the military. PITT OHIO has always been a great company that I am proud to be a part of.”

“PITT OHIO is like a family and coming to work for this company was a no brainer for me,” Williams continued. “The amount of former military members in the company makes it even better because there are people here that I can relate with. PITT OHIO has made a huge difference on my life solely because I know if I have something I have to do with the Guard, I don’t have to worry or stress about what my civilian employer will say or think when I have to leave for extended periods of time. They are very accommodating and I am proud to call myself a member of the PITT OHIO family.”

William E. Scott, a United States Navy Veterans and driver with PITT OHIO’s Richmond terminal for 19 years, commented on the easy transition from the military to civilian life. “The training and discipline I received while I served prepared me for the transition. PITT OHIO is a great company and they made it very easy to work in their environment as a team player and encourages me to be the best professional driver I could be. I would recommend PITT OHIO to anyone looking to join a team – it would be well worth it. I am proud to be an employee at PITT OHIO.”

Richmond Driver Charles Wyatt said, “No military is stronger than its soldiers. No company is stronger than its employees. PITT OHIO believes strongly in this and it is one of the best companies to work for.”

Robert Gelbaugh Jr from PITT OHIO’s Harrisburg terminal served in the Army and reflected back on the lessons his service instilled in him. “I was taught to be able to accomplish anything,” Gelbaugh said. “Skills and knowledge passed down by those that came before me.”

Gelbaugh served in Korea, Central and South America, the Middle East and at several posts in the United States. He admits that transitioning to civilian life was not easy, a task made even more difficult with a young family. “But PITT OHIO gave me the ability to take care of my family and make that transition successful,” he said. “They’ve been there for me and my family for the last 25 years. There is no better place to work than PITT OHIO.”

PITT OHIO EARNS 2019 MILITARY FRIENDLY® EMPLOYER DESIGNATION

PITT OHIO, a leader in regional and national logistics services, announced today that it has earned the 2019 Military Friendly® Employer designation, achieving both Gold and Top 10 status, ranking 3^rd among 224 employers.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® Employer designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 200 companies participated in the Military Friendly® Employers portion of the 2019 Military Friendly® Companies survey.

PITT OHIO DRIVERS TO COMPETE AT ATA NATIONAL TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP

PITT OHIO, an industry-leading transportation and logistics company, announced they will be sending five of its drivers to compete at the American Trucking Associations National Truck & Step Driving Championships. The competition, recognizing the safest drivers in the country, will take place August 15-18 in Columbus, Ohio.

PITT OHIO’s safety program is highly regarded within the industry. A recipient of the President’s Trophy 6 times and multiple awards in states covering the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions, the company’s commitment to safety both on and off the road has prepared these drivers well for the qualifying state competition and the National Championship. 26 PITT OHIO drivers competed at the state level to qualify for nationals; 5 qualified by placing 1^st in their respective categories.

Ohio State Championships

Richie Bowman, from the company’s Columbus terminal, earned the first place finish in the 5-Axle Class Competition. This will be Richie’s second appearance at the National Competition. “Since the first time I was eligible to compete I have been hooked!” Bowman said. “PITT OHIO encourages all drivers to try their hand at the competition. Not only to get the experience, but also to promote safety and learn more about the importance of being a safe driver. The overall excitement of getting to the next level of competition is unlike anything I’ve experienced before and I’m so excited to compete at nationals. I would like to thank PITT OHIO for giving me the opportunity to do something I am very passionate about!
Jeff Pentrack, from the company’s Columbus terminal, finished in first place in the 4-Axle Class Competition. This will be Jeff’s second year in a row at Nationals. “I have worked very hard in the last year and every year I learn more to improve my skills,” Pentrack said. “I have studied, practiced, and will be giving it my all in Columbus. We work together, we practice together, we will win together. Go Team PITT OHIO!”

Maryland State Championships

Michael Miltenberger, from the company’s Cumberland terminal, earned the first place finish in the 5-Axle Class Competition and earned the Overall Grand Champion Award for scoring the highest among all drivers in the State. This will be Mike’s fourth time competing on the national stage. Miltenberger said, “I enjoy the comradery that we build at the TDC’s. We are all competing against each other, but are still encouraging everyone to do their best. Competing helps me to be on top of my game all the time. Sharpening my skills and knowledge of this ever growing industry is a must. ‘Don’t become a distracted driver make it home alive,’ no matter what you drive. Always watch out for the other guy!”

West Virginia Championships

Paul Norman, from the company’s Charleston terminal, earned the first place finish in the Flatbed Class. This will be Paul’s third appearance at the National Competition. Norman said, “I consider it a great honor to represent PITT OHIO and the great state of West Virginia in the National event.”

Charles Randolph, from the company’s Charleston terminal, finished in first place in the Straight Truck Class Competition. This will be Charles’ fourth time competing at nationals. Randolph said, “This experience is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the trucking industry and PITT OHIO. Special thanks to Chuck Hammel for letting us compete.”

The Truck Driving Championships, a 3-day competition, is an opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their driving skills and safety expertise. The event includes a difficult driving-skills challenge, pre-trip inspection and written examination covering vehicle operation and knowledge of federal safety regulations.

“I would like to congratulate all five drivers for making it to the National Truck Driving Championships,” Jeff Mercadante, Vice President of Safety at PITT OHIO, said. “All five drivers are true professionals and have the ability to win their class and the prestigious award of Grand Champion. Good Luck at the NTDC!”

PITT OHIO’s Manager of Training & Development, Dean Yockey works with the drivers to prepare them for the national competition. “I am incredibly proud of the five drivers that will represent PITT OHIO at the National Truck Driving Championship,” Yockey said. “They are among the best of the best competing for the title of National Champion. I commend them for all of their hard work and dedication to make it to this prestigious event and wish them the best of luck as they compete in Columbus! Go Team PITT OHIO!”

PITT OHIO Wins 3 Logistics Management LTL Quest for Quality Awards

PITT OHIO announced today the receipt of 3 Logistics Management Quest for Quality Awards in the categories of Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional LTL, Truckload and Expedite. The Quest for Quality Awards are the gold standard for customer satisfaction and performance excellence for carriers, ports, and logistics providers worldwide.

For the twenty-fourth time, PITT OHIO has earned a spot in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) category. PITT OHIO’s expedite service, Fast Track, earned a spot for the 11^th time among national carriers. ECM TRANSPORT, PITT OHIO’s sister truckload carrier, earned a spot on the list for the 3^rd time.

These 2018 awards bring PITT OHIO’s overall grand total to 39 Quest for Quality Awards in the categories of Regional LTL, National LTL, Expedited and Truckload.

Logistics Management’s (LM) Annual Quest for Quality Awards is the culmination of a six-month research project conducted by Peerless Research Group (PRG). For more than three decades, LM’s Quest for Quality has been regarded in the transportation and logistics industry as the most important measure of customer satisfaction and performance excellence.

PITT OHIO Named 2018 Inbound Logistics Top Green Supply Chain Partner

PITT OHIO, a leader in regional and national logistics services and sustainability in the transportation industry, has been named a 2017 “G75 Supply Chain Partner” by Inbound Logistics magazine.

Throughout its history, PITT OHIO has looked for innovations and best practices that address the various impacts the freight transportation business can have on our communities, customers, and the environment. Today, PITT OHIO’s sustainability platform focuses on People, Planet and Purpose, and is committed to doing its best to achieve environmental and social responsibility.

The publication selects its G75 Supply Chain Partners by evaluating three areas: participation in public-private partnerships, corporate sustainability initiatives and collaborative customer-driven projects. Two benchmarks – measurable green results and sustainability innovation – are also considered in the decision-making process.

PITT OHIO has worked with Dr. Gregory Reed of the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering and local vendors over the last 2 years to implement a DC power micro-grid at its Pittsburgh terminal in Cheswick, PA. At the terminal, the micro-grid stores up to 70 kWh of renewable energy from 180 solar panels and 1 Windstax^TM wind turbine, which is enough energy to power electric forklifts, dock lights, and yard lights.

“One of the most exciting developments is seeing the way our sustainability initiatives affect all aspects of the organization,” said Justine Russo, Director of Sustainability and Business Intelligence at PITT OHIO. “Our electric forklifts are powered by renewable energy that we are able to generate and store onsite and these forklifts are also cleaner and quieter, which employees have said make for a better work environment. We are now installing electric forklifts at multiple facilities and are looking for where we can add renewable energy to power them.”

PITT OHIO’s next step is to implement another micro-grid at its new Cleveland terminal in Parma, OH, which is under construction. The OH facility will generate 7 times the renewable energy with 8 Windstax^TM wind turbines and 700 solar panels.

DHL Supply Chain Names PITT OHIO 2017 Regional LTL Carrier of the Year

PITT OHIO, a leader in regional and national logistics services, has been named the 2017 Regional LTL Carrier of the Year by DHL Supply Chain. PITT OHIO was one of seven carriers honored in March at the DHL Carrier Performance Award banquet in Miami, Florida.

To determine winners in each of the modal categories, DHL uses Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), including: on-time delivery, tender acceptance, EDI event compliance, and spend.
