PITT OHIO Relocates Indianapolis, IN Terminal

Pittsburgh, PA (December 7, 2020) - PITT OHIO, a leader in transportation and logistics services, announced the relocation of its Indianapolis, IN motor freight terminal to a larger, renovated facility.

The completely renovated terminal building is 26,440 square feet, an increase of over 9,000 square footage, and includes 71 dock doors, a gain of 48 from its previous location. Also on the complex is a 4,800 square foot 2-bay vehicle maintenance building, a new fueling island and tank, and an office building.

“We are excited about our new location in Indianapolis,” said Vice President of Operations, Brad Caven. “With the increase in dock doors, our customers gain more capacity and we are better able to service their needs in this growing market.”

As a sustainability leader, PITT OHIO takes steps towards a greener tomorrow by implementing and retrofitting green practices where possible to achieve its sustainability goals. Integral to this green building sustainability strategy is a goal to promote the construction and maintenance of buildings that are environmentally responsible, efficient and healthy places to work.

Areas within the office have been completely renovated using post-consumer recycled materials where possible, waterless urinals, and LED lighting throughout, including lot lighting. The complex features a weather station on the premises to monitor and research renewable data. Four electric tow motors are being used, which are quieter and produce less carbon emissions. Following in the footsteps of its other locations, PITT OHIO implemented a complete recycling program for plastic, pallets, paper and additional waste.

The new address will be 1235 Terminal Road in Indianapolis, less than 6 miles from its previous location.

PITT OHIO Opens New LEED Certified Trucking Terminal

Pittsburgh, PA (October 19, 2020) – PITT OHIO, a leader in transportation and logistics services, announced the completion of its new, state-of-the-art, LEED* Certified terminal in Parma, Ohio to service its customers in the Cleveland area. The 111,000 square foot facility includes a terminal, mechanic shop, office and warehouse, and will employ 182 employees, including drivers, dockworkers, mechanics, and office personnel.

Guided by the company’s LEED Gold Certified terminal in Pittsburgh, PA, PITT OHIO’s goal was to reduce the building’s impact on the environment throughout all phases of its life cycle, including: siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal.

Building upon past experience, PITT OHIO partnered with WindStax Energy to design and install a ZeroFirst® high voltage DC microgrid using PV and wind turbines to generate, store, and consume renewable energy on-site. Excess renewable energy is sent back to the utility when generation exceeds demand. This schema strikes a balance between self-consumption and net metering to reduce the facilities' annual carbon footprint.

PITT OHIO replicated the solar and wind power plan from Pittsburgh and enhanced it by installing eight 60’ WindStax Energy wind turbines and 1,500 rooftop solar panels to store close to 540,000 kWH in the facilities renewable energy powered microgrid. The energy will be stored and consumed on-site with the excess sent to the local utility grid. The wind and solar-based microgrid will use PITT OHIO’s patented process of taking wind and solar energy into a battery system and the subsequent distribution of that power to points of use. “This system will generate enough electricity to power a community of 50 average US households and offset 421 tons of carbon monoxide annually,” said Justine Russo, PITT OHIO’s Director of Sustainability. “That is the equivalent to eliminating one million miles driven by the average passenger car every year.”

After one year of operation, the commissioning engineer will test and verify the energy model to determine LEED* certification level. “All three of our sustainability pillars were thought of when constructing this facility,” PITT OHIO President, Chuck Hammel III, said. “It gives our people a safe, environmentally-friendly place to work. It furthers our commitment to the planet and reducing our carbon output through renewable energy and fuel efficiency. It solidifies our purpose as an innovative organization who aligns with various organizations who share our same approach of being committed to improving sustainability for future generations.”

The new facility is equipped to align with PITT OHIO’s commitment to a sustainable culture, and includes:

• Recycled material content in seating, tables, office chairs, work stations/cubicles, lounge seating, shelving and storage, and height adjustable tables
• Greater than 1,500 Solar Panels producing an estimated 500,823 kWh annual yield
• Eight 60’ WindStax wind turbines producing an estimated 38,237 kWh annually
• Storm water detention including bioswales and water-efficient landscaping including native plants and species that are tolerant to the region’s climate.
• Low-flow fixtures and waterless urinals reduce water use to 30% below standar
• The building site orientation is situated to take advantage of maximum daylight capacities. Large translucent window panels installed on the dock to allow for abundant natural light during the daytime.
• Over 870 LED lights, which are 80% more efficient than traditional lighting, and reduces the carbon footprint by up to a third.

• Office – 43% savings in energy usage
• Terminal and warehouse – 30-40% savings in energy usage
• Mechanic Shop – 23% savings in energy use

• Electric Forklifts, which save oil and electricity and emits zero carbon.
• Geothermal Heating and Cooling System, which is an efficient process that takes advantage of the ground temperature of the earth, which is a constant 55 degrees.

• 30 well field comprised of 6 circuits of five 360 feet deep wells
• The maintenance shop also includes radiant heating from a 15 well field comprised of 3 circuits of five 600 feet deep wells

• Locally sourced materials

For the safety and comfort of our people, the new facility is equipped with:

• Electric standup forklifts with extended reach
• Heated warehouse with oversized ceiling fans for efficient heat distribution
• Sprinkler system in case of emergencies
• Haz Mat certified warehouse
• Inside and outside LED security cameras and solar charged electric security fence around the terminal as well as a centralized security system throughout the office

The terminal is located on 23.65 developed acres at 5570 Chevrolet Boulevard, 3 miles from its previous location in Cleveland. PITT OHIO has maintained a presence in the Cleveland area for 40 years.

PITT OHIO Receives Patent for Sustainable, Renewable Energy Process

PITT OHIO, a leader in regional and national logistics services and sustainability in the transportation industry, announced today the receipt of a patent for the process they developed to take wind and solar energy into a battery system and the subsequent distribution of that power to points of use.

The microgrid combines solar and wind energy with battery storage to power interior and exterior lighting loads throughout the facility. Awarded several US patents, the high voltage direct current distribution-to-the-fixture design uses renewable energy with maximum efficiency. Utility power is available seamlessly as a backup and excess renewable energy is sent to the grid. Wind and solar production combined with massive energy storage capacity allows the terminal to function autonomously, independent of the grid, essentially indefinitely. “This type of energy resilience and carbon offset is unprecedented in the trucking industry and is a major competitive advantage to PITT OHIO and its customers,” said Ron Gdovic, Founder and CEO, WindStax Energy.

“The company is an early adopter of advanced distributed energy resources (DER) using renewable energy at its terminals to help achieve its sustainability goals,” Gdovic continued. PITT OHIO’s Cleveland terminal in Parma, Ohio applies best practices in LEED-certified construction and renewable energy production to its newest terminal. This is the company’s second terminal to use a major wind and solar-based microgrid in collaboration with WindStax. PITT OHIO previously worked with WindStax at its Pittsburgh, PA terminal.

Limited renewable energy choices in Ohio helped make the case for on-site generation in Parma. Only 2.5% of the state’s net electricity is generated by renewable energy. Coal fuels 58% of generation, natural gas fuels 24%, and nuclear energy accounts for another 15% (US EIA 2017). Building upon past experience, PITT OHIO partnered with WindStax Energy to design and install a ZeroFirst® high voltage DC microgrid using PV and wind turbines to generate, store, and consume renewable energy on-site. Excess renewable energy is sent back to the utility when generation exceeds demand. This schema strikes a balance between self-consumption and net metering to reduce the facilities' annual carbon footprint.

“The idea began with the Solar installation at our East Windsor, NJ Terminal,” admitted Jim Maug, PITT OHIO’s Director of Building Maintenance and Property Management. “At about that same time we were looking into lighting upgrades across all properties, with retrofitting LED lighting as a cost-effective install. Integrating the renewable energy supply with the DC powered components of LED lighting would be a cost-effective approach. Additionally, powering DC components without converting to AC is the efficient approach, eliminating the energy loss in a conversion from DC to AC. The vision was there and with the help of many experts, we were able to bring this microgrid technology to fruition.”

“This project demonstrates how Sustainability is interwoven into the culture of PITT OHIO,” Fields continued. “It represents some of the best and brightest innovation, design, patience, and forethought found anywhere. Most exciting is that we will be evaluating what we learned with this facility to further improve our design as new technology is developed. We are already looking ahead 5 to 10 years and how we can leverage Sustainability with our customers to provide them with a unique value proposition.”

PITT OHIO Named 2020 Inbound Logistics Leading Green Supply Chain Supplier

Pittsburgh, PA (June 10, 2020) - PITT OHIO, a leader in regional and national logistics services and sustainability in the transportation industry, has been named a 2020 Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics Magazine.

The publication Inbound Logistics selects the G75 Green Supply Chain winners based on four benchmarks: sustainability innovation, measurable green results, continuous improvement and industry recognition. The G75 list is released annually and highlights the strides companies are taking to make sure the footprint they leave on the world is a positive one.

People normally don’t always think sustainability when they think of trucking, but PITT OHIO strives to be a leader in sustainability through innovations that improve efficiency & reduce carbon. Sustainability differentiates PITT OHIO from the competition, supports our employee-centric strategy, and creates efficiencies that save money. The company uses data to identify and understand the key sources of carbon in their trucks and in their buildings and measure how these innovations are impacting their footprint. Diesel fuel is one of the largest contributors to carbon emissions globally and makes up approximately 90% of PITT OHIO’s carbon footprint. Therefore, the trucking company invests in people and technology to drive efficiency to reduce fuel usage.

In 2019, average truck miles per gallon improved by 1.1%. This small percentage results in saving an estimated 175,000 gallons of diesel a year. That energy savings is equivalent to what it would take to power 200 homes for one year. PITT OHIO is also thinking about other ways to power our trucks and facilities and therefore, renewable energy continues to be a key part of our sustainability strategy.

“Our long-term vision is to use renewable energy to charge electric trucks,” revealed Justine Russo, PITT OHIO’s Director of Sustainability. “In 2019, we tested an electric vehicle & researched fast charging for trucks off our microgrid. Renewable energy makes up 7% of PITT OHIO’s electricity. When our new Cleveland facility opens, 10% of electricity used at our terminals will be from renewable sources.”

PITT OHIO NJ Terminal Receives LEED Certification

PITT OHIO, a leader in transportation and logistics services, announced today their East Windsor, NJ terminal has been awarded LEED® Certified. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.

PITT OHIO’s East Windsor terminal, an existing building, achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

- The 1,094 ground mounted solar panels generates most of the facility’s electric demands throughout the year. There are multiple months where the solar panel array is able to generate excess energy that is re-distributed back to the grid.

- The building is equipped with low-flow plumbing fixtures in the bathroom facilities, reducing the amount of water consumed by the property by more than when compared to standard fixtures.

- The building replaced the lighting in the loading dock area with LED light fixtures, reducing energy consumption of the terminal. LED light fixtures also have a longer lifespan that reduces the overall waste the facility produces.

The East Windsor terminal is PITT OHIO’s 4^th facility to achieve LEED status. The company’s Pittsburgh terminal and mechanic shop which are both LEED Gold and the mechanic shop in Cincinnati achieved Certified status.

PITT OHIO Announces New Next Day Lanes

PITT OHIO, a leader in transportation and logistics services, announced the opening of three new next-day lanes to the New England area.

PITT OHIO is extending its’ next day service to include Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Customers can expect improved transit times to and from three of its eastern terminals, including: Harrisburg and Allentown, PA, and East Windsor, NJ.

“PITT OHIO continues to put our customers first by responding to their shipping needs while continuing to deliver on our promise to provide consistent and reliable service,” said Geoff Muessig, PITT OHIO’s Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President. “Our customers with shipments to New England can trust in these improved next day transit times and expect the same reliable service.”

This news comes just after the announcement of the company’s next day lane to Western NY and their next day service offering to the Greater Toronto area of Canada in 2019.
