Density Calculator

This freight Density Calculator measures the volume and density (PCF) of your shipments. You will also be provided an estimated class, applicable only to density-based freight classifications, as established by NMFTA regulations.

To calculate the density of your freight you'll need to weigh and measure the length, width, and height of each piece in your shipment, including its packaging and pallet. Once you have these measurements, simply enter the weights and dimensions into the designated fields below. The calculator will then do the rest, providing you with accurate volume and density calculations.

NOTE: Estimated class is applicable to density-based freight classifications only, as established by NMFTA regulations. If your freight item number is not a density-based commodity, the estimated class provided may not apply. Actual freight class is subject to NMFTA rules and regulations.

Volume:
Length × Width × Height (inches) ÷ 1728 (in3)
Density:
Weight (lbs) ÷ Volume (ft3)
Volume:
40" × 48" × 42" ÷ 1728 = 46.7 ft3
Density:
1,500 lbs ÷ 46.7 ft3 = 32.1 PCF

*The estimated class reflected in the PITT OHIO Density Calculator is an estimate based only on density, as applied to the standardized NMFTA density scale. Please refer to your product’s NMFC guidelines to verify the applicable freight class. Actual freight class is subject to NMFTA rules and regulations.
