    PITT OHIO took a proactive approach to the new Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA)* protocol in place by initiating training with our drivers and vehicle maintenance personnel. Through this proactive mindset, PITT OHIO has established and continually maintains an excellent LTL motor carrier safety rating, low accident frequencies and excellent SafeStat numbers through our commitment to the following procedures:

    *The Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce commercial motor vehicle (CMV) related crashes by targeting unsafe operations. CSA is designed to make the roads safer.

    What do I need to know about shipping hazardous materials?

    PITT OHIO is proud to be recognized as having one of the highest rated Safety Departments in the Transportation Industry. In order to ensure complete compliance with Federal Regulations, PITT OHIO is always willing to provide you (Shipper) with assistance in regards to the shipping of hazardous materials as well as up-to-date information on the latest hazardous materials regulations. Per 49 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) every hazardous material shipment requires the following three things on a properly completed hazardous material bill of lading:

    1. A basic shipping description
    2. A signed shipper's certification
    3. An Emergency Response Telephone Number

    Hazardous Material Descriptions

    Every hazardous shipping material must have a basic description completed on the bill of lading. The basic description consists of the following six parts:

    1. Proper Shipping Name
    2. Hazard Class
    3. Identification Number
    4. Packing Group Number (unless exempt)
    5. Pieces
    6. Weight

    The basic description must appear on a hazardous material bill of lading in one of three ways: the basic shipping description must be listed first before all non-hazardous shipments bill of lading, it may be highlighted to distinguish it from other shipments, or an "X" may be placed in the Hazardous Material column. The weight must be listed on the bill of lading in order to determine how much of the hazardous material is being transported so that the proper placards can be displayed on the unit.

    Any hazardous material offered for transport must be properly marked and labeled per regulation. These markings include but are not limited to; Proper Shipping Name including technical name if it is a N.O.S, Identification Number, and the Name & Address of the Shipper and/or Consignee. Labels must be affixed to any package containing hazardous materials if so required. The labels required can be found in Column 6 of the Hazardous Materials Table. (49 CFR 172.101)
