PITT OHIO Wins 2022 Carnegie Science Center Award

Pittsburgh, PA (October 14, 2022) - PITT OHIO, a leader in regional and national logistics services, announced today the receipt of a 2022 Carnegie Science Center Award in the Corporate Leadership category.  The Carnegie Science Center, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will honor PITT OHIO for their work in creating patented renewable energy-powered, direct current microgrids.

Established in 1997, Carnegie Science Awards have honored the accomplishments of more than 600 scientists, technologists, educators, business leaders, and organizations who are making a difference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and beyond.

Winners are chosen by a committee of peers comprised of both past awardees and industry leaders, who selected the most deserving innovators whose contributions have led to significant economic or societal benefit in western Pennsylvania.

“The Carnegie Science Awards celebrate and highlight the accomplishments of the creative and forward-thinking minds in Pittsburgh’s science, technology, and education communities and provides opportunities for them to share their stories,” said Jason Brown, Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of Carnegie Science Center. “They are making incredible contributions to their respective fields, and we are honored to recognize these outstanding changemakers at our Geek Out Gala event.”

PITT OHIO has been on the forefront of patented renewable energy-powered, direct current microgrids. Along with the University of Pittsburgh, WindStax, and other western Pennsylvania providers, PITT OHIO developed a solution for locally produced, clean, renewable energy that is not only more efficient but also gains further efficiency by using that electricity in a direct current system.

PITT OHIO took this proof of concept in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, and created a one-megawatt microgrid in their Cleveland facility. That facility has recently started using two electric Volvo VNR trucks paving the way forward for a cleaner way of delivering freight. The microgrid technology has already received a patent for its innovative approach to combining and storing both solar and wind energy to be used on-demand as needed.

PITT OHIO Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, Geoff Muessig, said, “We are honored to be recognized among the innovative leaders in Western Pennsylvania.  It might seem surprising to some that an asset-based logistics provider would receive a science award, but innovation has been a hallmark of PITT OHIO’s success for many years.  PITT OHIO’s leadership encourages and inspires innovative thinking and provides support for exploring unique ideas in transporting goods with a truck.  PITT OHIO is proud to set the pace in our industry by operationalizing innovative carbon reductions initiatives that benefit our customers, our employees and the communities that we serve.”

PITT OHIO’s Chief Operating Officer, Jim Fields, said, “PITT OHIO is proud to be recognized in Pittsburgh, a city that is entrenched with leaders in Science and Engineering.  We love taking an opportunity or an idea, and running with it to see to what extent that opportunity can benefit the community and be a pathway to solve the challenges we face in our business.”

PITT OHIO’s Director of Sustainability and Business Intelligence, Justine Russo, accepted the award on PITT OHIO’s behalf on October 13 at The Geek Out Gala and Carnegie Science Awards. In addition to celebrating the award recipients, the event raised funds to support Carnegie Science Center education programs that nurture the next generation of leaders in science and technology.
