Drive Smart: Safe Lane Changes

10 Essential Driving Tips for Safe Summer Travel

As the sun shines bright and summer vacations begin, the roads transform into a congested landscape, demanding heightened caution from both truck drivers and everyday civilians alike. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 9.2% of all truck crashes involve lane changes. We have curated a list of important safety tips and insights to help you navigate blind spots while traveling on America’s busy highways this summer.

To ensure your upcoming journeys are both happy and safe during the summer months, review these 10 essential tips.

  1. Set Up for Success

Before beginning the trip, properly adjust the driver’s seat and clean and adjust all mirrors to minimize your blind spots.

  1. Scan Often

While driving, scan your mirrors every three to five seconds so you know what is around your vehicle.

  1. Spacial Awareness

Manage your space by making certain you have enough space to complete your maneuver before you make your move.

  1. Communication Is Key

Communicate your intentions to change lanes or merge with other drivers by turning on your turn signals before you begin your maneuver. A minimum of five seconds and three blinks of your turn signal is recommended.

  1. Making A Pass

After you pass, make sure the vehicle you just passed has the proper following distance behind you before you change back in front of it.

  1. Keep An Eye Out

Watch for vehicles around you that may be moving into your blind spots.

  1. Watch Out for Blind Spots

Determine the location of any vehicles that “disappear.” If you have sight of a vehicle and suddenly you do not see it, it is most likely in your blind spot. Do NOT change lanes until you can see it again.

  1. Be Prepared, Respond Accordingly

Be prepared to respond to the changing movements of each vehicle near you, including their speeding up to prevent you from changing lanes.

  1. Expect the Unexpected

Anticipate and prepare for unexpected actions of other motorists. Always expect the unexpected.

  1. Help Traffic Flow

Be prepared to yield the right-of-way to other motorists as necessary to accommodate entry of any vehicle into the traffic flow.

We care about your safety and want to make sure truck drivers and the public are well prepared when traveling this summer. Staying vigilant and aware of blind spots is essential for ensuring safety on the road for yourself and your fellow highway travelers. Arriving safely should always be your number one priority.

Happy Travels!
